Mi'Kmaq House of Assembly

Debert, Nova Scotia

The Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq, led by President Joseph B. Marshall, commissioned the programming and design of a Mi’kmaq House of Assembly for presentation to a General Assembly of the Mi’kmaq. The proposal calls for a unified House of Assembly which could be a unified voice for various Mi’kmaq First Nations and a home for the Mi’kmaq Grand Council. It would accommodate a museum which would be equipped to handle the repatriation of important Mi’kmaq artefacts from collections around the world. Two schemes were designed, both of them designed to be constructed of local materials, using techniques of wood working developed within Mi’kmaq culture.
